for the Helmand tour. The expansion of BG (CS) almost doubled the men under

his command to more than 1,300.

Lt Col Doug Chalmers MBE 43 Battle Group

(2PWRR. OBE) Commander

As commanding officer of 2PWRR, he handed over BG (CS) to Thorneloe at the end

of April 2009. The two men had similarly nuanced approaches to counterinsurgency

and Chalmers stepped into the breach on 3 July 2009 just after Thorneloe

was killed. Awarded the OBE and since promoted to full colonel.

Iraq, Antelme won the DSO in 2008 for leadership under fire in Iraq. Although only

a major, when Thorneloe was killed he was plucked from his anti-terrorism job at

the MoD, promoted to lieutenant colonel and sent to Helmand.

Based at Brigade headquarters in Lashkar Gah. A confidant of Thorneloe and close

to Brigadier Tim Radford. Had left Welsh Guards in 2001 after a series of highprofile

appointments to become a schoolmaster. Rejoined Army for the tour. Left

early to take up post with Jordanian royal family.

Maj Nicky Mott 46 Quartermaster

One of the legendary Mott brothers, each of whom became a regimental sergeant

major. A Falklands veteran, Nicky Mott was in charge of keeping isolated bases supplied,

sending dangerous convoys along IED-strewn roads. Awarded MBE in 2011.

Maj Ben Ramsay 36 Plans Officer

Former Prince of Wales’s Company commander who joined the tour late after

Thorneloe decided he needed another senior major. Distinguished himself in

charge of 2 Company when Bettinson was on leave. Since became battalion second-

in-command.

Royal Artillery officer. In charge of coordinating all forms of fire support and

implementing ‘courageous restraint’ directive from Gen McChrystal. Third in

Acting platoon sergeant. From a tough, impoverished background and often in

trouble with the Welsh police, Peek proved himself in combat. Found himself in

command of 7 Platoon after Evison was wounded. Taken to Camp Bastion after he

began showing PTSD symptoms at XP-7. Recommended for MC but only awarded

JCC. PTSD treatment continues. Daughter Taryn born in 2010.

Maj Sean Birchall (KIA) 34

Company Commander. Pushed Thorneloe hard for Helmand slot after missing out

on Iraq in 2004–5. Proved an inspirational commander on Op Zafar at end of April

and moulded IX Company into a fighting unit. Thorneloe had plans to give him a

challenging new role during Panther’s Claw but he was killed by an IED on 19 June.

Capt Alex Corbet Burcher (QCVS) 29

Commander TF Nawa. Promoted to Acting Major when he became IX Company

commander after Birchall was killed. With a tour training Afghan army soldiers

under his belt, Thorneloe viewed him as a promising prospect. Commanded tiny

band of Welsh Guards and others at PB Jaker in Nawa until US Marines took over

in June. Since left the Army and is now at drama school.
